My friend wrote that she had felt conflicted about this on her 18th birthday a couple of days ago…and I kind of get what she means.

An easy way to pick which to use:
Lay must take a direct object. Lie happens to yourself.
You lay down all your college essays. Then, you lie in bed.
It only gets confusing when you notice the past tense of ‘lie’ is ‘lay’.
She laid down all her college essays. Then, she lay in bed.

Ooh, baby. It’s Christmas. I’m feeling not-so-sick anymore. Bakin’ up some more mini apple pie cookies tomorrow later today & going to a Christmas party that is truly a production, with a 5-foot pile of presents and carols and all. Oh, and hot pot. Duh. And I might get some Chinese food for lunch, because that’s what Jewish people do.

is making a list of everything you did in 2011. Now, “everything” means whatever you want - in my case, I made a Word Doc and added significant events under each month, going through pictures & blog posts to remember things. FB would probably help a lot with this!
